  • From art, music and poetry to hand bell ringing and gardening clubs, there’s a wealth of stimulating new activities to discover at Richmond Villages
  • The long winter can be a difficult time for many, none more so than the elderly when loneliness can be hard to bear
  • Age UK estimates there are around 1.2 million older people in the UK who are chronically lonely
  • Retirement property round-up: prices from £118,000

Having worked hard all your life, retirement should be a time to take control and do those things you have always wanted to do, rather than having life dictated to you.  Travel, explore, take up new interests, meet friends old and new.

At Richmond Villages, there’s a wealth of new activities being offered to residents this year.
From art, music and poetry to hand bell ringing and gardening clubs, there really is something for everyone, and what better way to try your hand at something different and meet new people?

“Social engagement is really important and being part of the wider community is something we encourage all our residents to enjoy,” says Nicola Jackson, senior village adviser at Richmond Nantwich. “As an example, we hold regular afternoon teas with St Luke’s Hospice – a highly regarded local charity that recently had to shut their cafe in town. It was very popular with local people, so by bringing it here there’s the opportunity for the local community to enjoy our facilities and meet our residents.”

Around the different villages, there’s so much going on. At Richmond Aston-on-Trent the gardening club is getting ready for spring, while local school children will be visiting residents in the care home. At Richmond Northampton the activities centre more around art, music, live performance and even poetry. The new hand bell ringing group can already be heard, as can the Richmond choir who are rehearsing for their summer performances. There is also an art competition reaching its finale in March.

“We all recognise the importance of staying physically active, but many of us forget the huge role that social and mental wellbeing play in our general health. It’s so important that care providers offer a varied range of activities, and the benefits are clear to see,” says Philippa Fieldhouse, managing director of Richmond Villages.

“Our residents get involved in all sorts, helping them build new friendships alongside their existing ones. As well as activities, volunteering opportunities prove popular, giving people the chance to maintain their involvement in the local community. These kinds of links are really important in helping people stay happy and healthy, and ultimately enjoy retirement.”

Assisted Living
Assisted Living with Richmond Villages means residents own a Village Suite at the heart of the village community, with all the facilities of the village centre close at hand.  Everything is designed to help maintain independence.

A Village Suite typically includes a lounge, kitchenette and en-suite bedroom, and to remove all the daily chores, there’s a service that includes all food, daily cleaning, laundry and utilities, freeing-up time to do those things you want to do.  And for those that might need it, personal care is available from Richmond’s own domiciliary care team.

Assisted Living - by numbers
Assisted Living at Richmond Villages has been described as more like living in a luxury hotel - perhaps this list of services is why!

  • Laundry is collected and returned twice a week
  • Three meals a day are served either in your Village suite or in the restaurant
  • A village car and driver is available five days a week
  • Cleaning service - seven days a week
  • 24-hour access to the onsite care team
  • Some 35 activities, classes, outings and events organised every week

“With an ageing population – see notes below -  we must do more as a nation to look after those in later life,” concludes Philippa.

  • Loneliness is an issue that disproportionately affects older people due to loss of partners and social networks, as well as the lessened ability to get out to activity socialise.
  • Improved physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of a range of disorders, including chronic conditions, dementia and hip fractures.
  • There are now 11.6 million people aged 65 or over in the UK (Source: Mid-2015 Population Estimates UK Office for National Statistics, 2016).  That number is projected to increase by 40.77% in the next 17 years to over 16 million, and by 2040, nearly one in four people in the UK (24.2%) will be aged 65 or over.  (Source: National population projections for the UK, 2014-based, Office for National Statistics, 2015).
